Meet the Nasal Width Team

This site names the team that writes, reviews and performs. The guides are led and medically reviewed by Tongchun Mao, MD, who performs nasal and profile surgery here; the colleagues below contribute the surgical standards, the skin and dermatology expertise and the tertiary-hospital backstop that an assessment of the nose and its airway sometimes needs, because breathing and skin condition are part of what decides the plan rather than details after it.

Tongchun Mao

Tongchun Mao (毛彤春)

Deputy Director & Head of Aesthetic Surgery · Vice Chief Physician, Licensed Aesthetic Attending · Lead Physician of This Site

Nasal width assessment · rhinoplasty and profile planning · facial aesthetic surgery

Dr. Tongchun Mao is an aesthetic surgeon at Chongqing West District Hospital, where he is Deputy Director and Head of Aesthetic Surgery in its Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center and the responsible physician for this site. He personally performs more than 700 operations a year, within hospital standards of assessment, anaesthesia and follow-up.

He examines the airway before he discusses contour, because every operation that narrows a nose also narrows the passage through it, and a plan that ignores that turns an appearance decision into a functional one. He then separates the two widths with measurements rather than impressions, and he will say which level is the wide one even when it is not the level the patient came in asking about. Where the width is proportion to a broad face, or where the achievable change is a few millimetres traded for a permanent scar, he says so and does not schedule an operation around a request he thinks the face will not carry.

Clinical focus

  • Measurement of the bony vault and the alar base as separate widths
  • Rhinoplasty and osteotomy for bone-driven nasal width
  • Alar base surgery, including its scars and its limits
  • Nasal airway assessment when width and breathing are both in question
  • Honest advice where a nose is in proportion to the face and needs nothing

The two widths are not one question

The vault is bone and the base is soft tissue. One is moved, the other is removed, and neither operation reaches the other level. A plan that names a single width without saying which level it belongs to has not said what will be done, and that is the first thing worth pinning down in a consultation.

Find out which part of your nose is actually the wide one

Arrange an assessment. We will measure the bony vault and the alar base separately, examine your airway, and tell you plainly whether treatment is worth it, what it would cost you in recovery and risk, and why the answer may be to leave the nose alone.
